two funds, one mission

Future Food Fund I laid the foundation by investing in early stage Dutch companies delivering practical solutions for a more sustainable and circular food system.
Future Food Fund II builds on this foundation, scaling impact across Europe with a clearer thematic focus and a formal impact framework aligned with Planetary Boundaries.

Across both funds, our investments concentrate on three interconnected categories.

  • Sustainable farming: Improving yields with fewer inputs and with a positive impact on planetary boundaries.
  • Resilient supply chains: Reducing waste, increasing transparency and enabling sustainable sourcing and reporting.
  • Sustainable food development: Replacing fossil-based and animal-based ingredients; valorizing waste streams and supporting circular economy.

FFF I

Laying the foundation for sustainable food innovation
€15 million, launched 2017, SFDR Article 8

Future Food Fund I was launched in 2017 by a group of entrepreneurial investors, with support from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RvO). With a national focus and a pioneering spirit, FFF I invested in Dutch early-stage companies developing practical solutions for a more sustainable and circular food system.

FFF I is classified as an SFDR Article 8 fund. While impact was not yet formalised at fund level, many portfolio companies played a clear role in lowering environmental pressure and enabling a more resource-efficient food system. Portfolio companies address themes such as:

  • Smart farming, including sensor-based crop monitoring, autonomous harvesting and precision livestock management
  • Soil and crop health, with biobased soil inputs and salt-tolerant seed varieties
  • Biobased and circular ingredients and materials, including ingredient upcycling and biodegradable growing carriers
  • Packaging-free and zero-waste retail models, aimed at reducing food and packaging waste

FFF II

Scaling impact across Europe’s food system
€40 million, launched 2022, SFDR Article 9

Future Food Fund II builds on the foundation of the first fund, with a clearer focus, broader geographic scope and formal impact framework. Launched in 2022, the €40 million Article 9 fund brings together entrepreneurs, family offices and institutional investors, including the European Investment Fund (EIF), Wageningen University & Research, and the regional development agencies NOM (Northern Netherlands) and Oost NL (Eastern Netherlands), to back early-stage companies that contribute to staying within the planetary boundaries.

FFF II is classified as an SFDR Article 9 fund, with sustainable investment as its central objective. Every portfolio company is selected based on its measurable contribution to environmental impact and food system transformation.

  • Regenerative and adaptable farming, applying genomics, CRISPR, AI-based yield prediction, soil data and autonomous robotics
  • Resilient supply chains, with solutions using AI, traceability platforms, demand forecasting, carbon accounting tools and insetting verification systems.
  • Sustainable food development, encompassing precision fermentation, cell-based production platforms, upcycled ingredients, functional coatings and compostable or bio-based packaging solutions.
